FSC Eco Teak

Speciality woods is two things;
1. Speciality woods are exotic and premier grade timbers
2. SpecialityWoods is a division of Brooks Bros (UK) Ltd that focuses on sustainable and responsibly sourced wood

Why wood?

Probably its most valuable asset is ecological: the world’s forests serve as a buffer to protect against global warming. Deforestation is a threat to woods’ natural habitats which is why only the most sustainable woods should be logged.

It is also unique: with no two pieces looking the same or having the same characteristics, making it much sought-after for its natural warmth and beauty.

Woods’ strengths and end uses, that are many and varied through hundreds of species found naturally throughout the world, give it enormous commercial importance.

It’s a natural insulator, and has always been a necessary, readily available and valuable material for boat and house builders.

Regeneration not deforestation

Twenty percent of global carbon emissions come from deforestation.

Helping counter this destruction, forest regeneration renews tree cover by claiming the land to allow trees to grow naturally. Land can also be optimised by managing tree growth through long-term sustainable forestry.

There is no better option than trees. This must be the way forward. It demonstrates purpose-growth in which both species and forest density are well maintained (based on many years of field experience and commercial experience), that results in wood of high quality and commits to a clear environmental outcome.

Certified forest plantations

An efficient and well-run forest plantation generates financial, social and environmental benefits for many, by producing high quality wood while offsetting global warming and environmental degradation.

All speciality woods are sourced where possible from forests professionally managed to meet the rigorous standards set by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This seal of approval guarantees wood products come from responsibly managed sources and confirms they are entirely legal and sustainable.

FSC also conforms to the UK government’s Central Point of Expertise on Timber Procurement’s (CPET) category A material, which is a mandatory requirement of suppliers to all central government projects. These plantations support some 17 species of speciality woods, including Teak.

Teak

The aesthetic value of Teak has made it an ideal boat building and construction timber for more than 2,000 years. Teak is highly valued for its beautiful, tight grain and golden tones that weathers to a distinct silver hue. When first cut/surfaced, Teak will exhibit colour variation. This will, with exposure to natural light, oxidise to a mellow gold colour. Over a lifetime of use, Teak requires little to no maintenance to preserve its beauty and
dependable stability.

Traditionally, Teak was sourced in Myanmar (previously Burma) but, with procurement direct from Myanmar banned to boat building and other industries, supply has been limited and of suspect origin.

In looking to improve this situation, SpecialityWoods has been responsible for sourcing sustainable alternatives such as FSC Recycled Teak and FSC EcoTeak – Teak of
non-Burma origin.

FSC EcoTeak: Non-Burma OriginTM

Due to a rising demand for Teak, SpecialityWoods has sought out the world’s best suppliers of sustainable and environmentally friendly FSC certified old growth plantation Teak. The result is a product of very high quality – FSC EcoTeak: Non–Burma OriginTM (Tectona Grandis), that offers timber specifiers and users a reliable and sustainable choice that in turn satisfies Responsible and Ethical Purchasing decisions. This Teak is ideal for the marine, furniture, flooring, restoration and construction industries as well as the woodworking hobbyist.
